This game was originally announced at Jump Festa 2007 in Japan in trailer form, but without naming a specific console. It was found out that it was being presented in 780p, meaning that it had to be either on the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation3. Namco-Bandai used a very clever approach to "announce" the console via a series of "goofs" in their HTML code on Tales Channel and Sakuraba's official English website. More specifically, the Sakuraba website edit after its discover had a "congrats for finding this" message in English, which led some to speculate they might be planning an North American localization (otherwise, it would have been presented in Japanese).
After a few months without any new news, someone on GameFAQ's "Poll of the Day" board got a hold of a copy of Play Magazine, which had an exclusive on the game. It included not only news that a North American release would occur, but that it would be nearly simultaneous with the Japanese release --- to coincide with the 10th Anniversary of the series in North America. Normally, every game released in North America was nearly a year after the initial Japanese release up to this point. A lengthy interview was also conducted in this interview, which revealed some very interesting information...
Battle-wise, the game would use an "enhanced" version of Tales of the Abyss's FR-LMBS, but would includes changes such as up to four Overlimit bars being used on a single character (unlike in previous games where each player had their own --- note that the game does allow characters to use them separately, like normal) and monsters "grouping" together to form parties of seven to eight monsters. Story-wise, it caters to the high school/university crowd, so this means it will have more of an "mature" story (like how Abyss's story was more "grown-up", compared to a game like Symphonia).
Lastly, it was revealed that the theme song for the game would have Japanese & English lyrics --- using the same artist for both versions. Said artist has yet to be revealed yet, however.
