Cless Alvein lives in the village of Toltus, with his friend Chester Barklight. One day, they travel to the forest south of the village to catch a wild boar.

They stumble across Yggdrasil, the tree of life for the world of Aselia. The spirit of the tree, Martel, appears and talks to them. They both hear the noise of the village bell, which is rung only when the village is in danger.

When the two boys return to the village, they find it in shambles. Both of Cless's parents are found dead (his mother dies after telling him to go to his grandparent's house in her final seconds of life), as well as Chester's sister, Ami Barklight. Chester stays behind while Cless goes to meet his grandparents. Little does he know that this will turn out to be the start of an epic journey that will span the past, present, and future.
