Early in the game, Luke is accused of stealing food from Engeave. It turns out the Cheagles are the guilty party. In order to prevent their race from becoming Liger chow, the Cheagles steal food from Engeave for the Ligers.

Luke suggests that they haul the guilty Cheagles back to Engeave. Now Tear or Ion, I can't remember whom, points out that if they were to do so, the Ligers would attack Engeave, wiping out the people in the village. Luke explicitly states that he doesn't care what happens to that "stupid village."

Cut to a bit later in the game. Jade, a party member of Luke's, stabs some guy. Luke is soon forced to fight to kill to save his own life, and he struggles for a long time over taking a human life.

Isn't this a contradiction? How can someone who didn't care if an entire village became Liger food be so suddently concerned over human life? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Luke has this admiriable trait, but this seems like a contradiction. What do you think?
The later part was when they were escaping from the Tartarus, right (when the God Generals attacked it, right?)?

It's been a while since I played the game, so it's not completely fresh in my mind, but it seems like when he was at Engeve, he didn't care because it didn't have to directly do with him (plus, he had never faced that, due to being raised in the manor near the castle).

However, when he had to directly be involved in the action of killing someone, something he never faced before, his inherent "human" feelings towards it (since no average person would willingly kill someone) made him contemplate it.

I guess that could be considered part of his "growing up", in a way.

That's my theory on it, anyway.

Yes.

I suppose your answer makes a certain amount of sense. I suppose whether or not you are directly involved would affect your point of view. However, it still seems a bit odd that he could care less about the lives of an entire village one moment, and suddenly can't force himself to kill a holy guard to save his own life, plus the life of his friends, the next.

Perhaps the writers should have elaborated on it a bit more, and explained how because it directly affected Luke, he couldn't bring himself to kill.
Lukes just an idiot lol, no i think he does not fell that way because hes a replica.
haha, you make a good point, but i think he doesnt care if they attack them because ehs not doing it and they can defend for themselves, and when he takes another persons life he gets scared because thats what a normal person would do.

I'm sorry to ask, but I don't see how that makes any sense whatsoever.:| I'm not referring to the feel typo, just the
overall post. Luke doesn't even know he's a replica at that point, so it wouldn't effect(sp?) him at all..... If you can,
could you please try to explain that to me?
While we're on the subject, at the time that information was posted, I did not know Luke was a replica. Please refrain from spoilers in the future. Those of us who are new to the game would rather discover the twists and turns on our own.

Back on subject, I totally agree with omicron. I fail to see how Luke being a replica has any bearing on his personality traits.

Anyway, I believe shadowrain no longer posts here, so you won't be hearing from him/her omicron. That's probably a good thing; we don't need someone who is going to spoil the storylines of all the Tales games hanging around the forums.
Darn, I'm lamenting for you. :(
I'd hate to have a horrible spoiler like that revealed to me, especially for such an oober game like ToA.
How I recall how FE:PR2* is gonna be ruined for me cuz' I read a horrid spoiler.
On gamefaqs FE:PR boards, there was a topic "Question: MAJOR SPOILERS"
Now I think that these are spoilers for FE:PR1 spoilers, since I'm on that board but NO!
It's a FE:PR2 spoiler!!!!!!!!

*Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance 2 (working title)
I thought they decided to title it Goddes of Dawn.
have they? well your faster on the uptake than I am! Okay, I suppose that make sense since presumably this'll
have more to do with the goddess and whatnot.;)
